Why and When You Need Secondary Containment

Implementing secondary storage solutions by providing environmental and pollution solutions can further midigate potential risk to the environment. The world is a precious resource. By using smart storage solutions and sound secondary containment measures, we can protect and preserve the environment.

Such solutions are “preventative”. Low-cost secondary containment measures are very affordable. Such solutions are more affordable than removing pollutants from the environment. By investing in sound precautionary measures, companies can prevent both damage and expensive headaches from ever occurring.

When Is Secondary Containment Needed?

Secondary containment is needed when any potentially dangerous chemicals or other materials must absolutely be contained within a static environment without exposure to nature. Our clients have used secondary containment to secure hydraulic oils, water treatment tanks, and other dangerous chemicals.

It’s especially important to install secondary containment measures if either people or the environment will be at an immediate risk should a leak occur. If dangerous chemicals are being stored on a shop floor, for example, both the primary and secondary storage solutions must be sound. If not, employees could be exposed. Likewise, if chemicals are being stored near groundwater or food sources, such as on a farm, it is vital to install secondary containment systems.

Low-cost but Effective Secondary Containment Solutions

Modutank offers low-cost secondary containment solutions that are built of membrane-lined galvanized steel structures. These solutions can be assembled quickly. Many of our storage tank solutions do not require special equipment or skills to assemble. Modular solutions, such as our ModuTanks, can be installed in a matter of hours. Since the steel is coated with zinc via hot-dip galvanization, it is highly resistant to corrosion.

A variety of liners can be used to contain specific pollutants and materials. Common materials include XR5, HDPE, LLDPE, and polypropylene. XR5 is an excellent solution for acids, oils, and other corrosive substances. HDPE solutions can be used for potable water solutions. Many other liners can be used for any given need.

There are a variety of solutions that can be implemented. ModuTanks can be permanently installed. Built of modules, the tanks can be designed to fit just about any shape. “T”, “U” and rectangular shapes are common. If secondary containment is needed only on a temporary basis, Econotanks can be rented. They provide many of the same benefits of ModuTanks. Econotanks are built of modules, and available with a variety of liners. These units do not have to be bolted into the ground and can be installed without damaging the site.

Every solution should be built to fit the specific needs of the site, system, and materials being contained. It’s also important to ensure that primary storage solutions are being properly implemented and are in good repair. Ideally, secondary containment will never have to be used. Of course, accidents and emergencies do happen, necessitating the need for extra precautions.
